Dorodango is a Japanese craft which involves making small balls of mud and polishing them with wet fingers to make them smooth. This craft is popular among children in Japan but adults also take part in it as a hobby or artistic form.

How to Make a Dorodango

A dorodango is a type of polished mud ball. The word dorodango comes from the Japanese words doro, meaning mud or dirt, and dango, meaning ball. Dorodango are made by shaping balls of mud, then polishing them until they are smooth and shiny. You can make dorodango in any color you like by using different kinds of mud. You can even make them sparkle by adding glitter to the mud before shaping the balls.

What You'll Need

To make a dorodango, you will need:

Mud

Water

A bowl or container

A spoon

A clean, dry cloth

A piece of cardboard, a plate, or a glass cup or jar

First, find a good spot to gather your mud. Make sure it's a place where you won't mind getting a little dirty! Once you have your mud, add water to it and mix it together until it's a nice, thick consistency.

Next, use your spoon to scoop some mud into your bowl or container. Then, take your clean, dry cloth and use it to cover the mud. Make sure the cloth is tight against the sides of the bowl so that no air can get in.

Now, it's time to let your dorodango sit and dry. You can either set it in the sun or in a warm, dry place indoors. Let it sit for at least 24 hours, or until it is hard and dry to the touch.

Once your dorodango is dry, it's time to polish it! You can use a piece of cardboard or a plate to rub the dorodango until it's nice and shiny, although it is usually easiest to use a glass cup or glass jar with a smooth rounded top. This will help you to make a nice rounded shape by rotating the dorodango along the rim, compressing and removing excess dirt. And that's it - you've made your very own dorodango!

Step One: Make the Ball

Start by adding mud to your bowl or container. Add enough water to the mud to make it the consistency of cookie dough. Use your spoon to mix the water and mud together until they are fully combined.

Next, use your hands to form the mud into a ball. The ball should be about the size of a tennis ball. Once you have made the ball, set it aside on the piece of cardboard or plate.

Now that you have made the ball, it is time to move on to the next step.

Step Two: Shape the Ball

Use your hands to mold the ball of mud into a sphere. The ball can be any size you’d like, but it is a good idea to make sure it fits comfortably in your hand. Then, use your thumbs to help shape and flatten the surface of the ball.

Next, use your hands to carefully smooth the edges of the ball adding a little more dry soil. Once you have done this, set the dorodango aside to dry.

Now that the dorodango is dry, it's time to start shaping and polishing it. Use a soft cloth to rub the entire surface of the disc. Be sure to rub in a circular motion. You can then switch to a glass cup, or jar lid that is smooth and rounded to help create a perfect sphere. Continue polishing until the disc is shiny. The process can take time, but is very rewarding.

Step Three: Polish the Ball

Once the dorodango is dry, it is time to start polishing it. To do this, use a very smooth surface such as the top of a rounded jar, or even the bottom of a glass to add moderate pressure and rub the dorodango in a circular motion. The presuure and smooth surface will continue to compress and polish the dorodango until it is mirror-like. Continue rubbing until the surface of the dorodango is completely smooth.

Next, use your dry cloth to buff the disc until it is shiny. Once you have done this, set the disc aside to dry completely.

Now that the disc is dry and polished, it is ready to use!

Step Four: Enjoy Your Dorodango Mud Ball

You have now completed your own dorodango. They make beautiful decorations and are incredible conversation pieces. Who would believe you could make something so beautiful from dirt!
